The Best Supermarket Loyalty Schemes

With food prices still rising in 2025, UK shoppers are turning to loyalty schemes to cut the cost of their weekly shop.

According to the ONS, grocery inflation is sitting at around 3-4% year-on-year, with the average household now spending over £33 per person per week on food, plus an extra £10 on eating out.
Loyalty cards are now more than just an extra – they’re a key way to save money on your food shop! The CMA found that 97% of us are signed up to at least one supermarket scheme, and most of us are using three. According to Gov.uk, these schemes can save shoppers 17-25% on selected items, and over 90% of loyalty deals were found to be genuine discounts, not inflated prices made to look like discounts.
However, 40% of shoppers worry the savings aren’t always what they seem, and that rival supermarkets may still offer a better regular price.

Why Loyalty Cards Are Worth It in 2025
With food prices still on the rise, it’s no surprise loyalty cards are more popular than ever! According to the CMA, nearly 9 in 10 shoppers are signed up to at least one supermarket loyalty scheme, and many of us are using three or more to make the most of the offers out there (Gov.uk).
It’s easy to see why loyalty cards are so popular. They can knock up to 15-30% off your total shop, and the CMA found average savings of around 20%.

ASDA’s Rewards app alone now has over 6 million active users, showing just how many people are getting on board.
That said, it’s still worth checking prices elsewhere. The CMA also found that some member prices were higher than what you’d pay in a different supermarket. And 43% of shoppers said they don’t think it’s fair that non-members miss out on lower prices.
We believe that loyalty cards are certainly worth having, especially at the places you shop most. But don’t rely on them alone – keep comparing prices to make sure you’re actually getting the best deal!

ASDA Rewards

ASDA’s loyalty app quickly became popular after launching back in 2022. Instead of collecting points, you get real cashback from offers, missions and bonus buys, which is then added to your digital ‘Cashpot’. You can then spend this money on your future shopping.
Why it’s good:
- You earn actual pounds, not points – £1 in your Cashpot is £1 off your next shop.
- Bonus missions (like ‘spend £50, get £5’) can stack up fast if you shop regularly.
- The app is easy to use and personal to you, with deals based on what you buy.
What’s not so good:
- You don’t earn on every item – only what’s part of a mission or deal.
- It’s App-only. There’s no physical card, which may not suit everyone.
- ASDA removed its ‘Star Products’ rewards in 2025, where you could earn cashback on more items.
Co-op Membership
Co-op scrapped its traditional points system after launching its ‘instant member prices’ in 2024. You’ll still need to join for £1, but now you get lower prices on everyday products straight away, plus some extra perks across Co-op’s other services.

Why it’s good:
- Discounts apply immediately – no need to build up points.
- Your shopping supports local causes at no extra cost.
- Members can enjoy discounts on insurance and funerals.
What’s not so good:
- No reward if an item isn’t part of a member deal.
- The old cashback model gave steady savings.
- The best offers are via the app, and Co-op stores aren’t everywhere.
Iceland – Bonus Card

Iceland’s Bonus Card is a mix of a savings scheme and a loyalty card. You can preload money onto your card and get £1 back for every £20 saved! You can also unlock Bonus Card Prices and free delivery at bigger shops.
Why it’s good:
- That 5% bonus on top-ups is hard to beat if you plan.
- Member-only discounts and Tuesday 10% off for over 60s.
- Ideal for budgeting – great if you save gradually for big shops or Christmas.
What’s not so good:
- Preloading funds means your money is locked in Iceland.
- You don’t earn anything just for swiping – no points system.
- Bonus Card balance expires if unused for 2 years – so keep it active.
Lidl Plus
Lidl’s app-based scheme has no points to collect, just regular discounts, personalised coupons and even fun scratchcard rewards every time you shop. You’ll also get monthly spend targets that unlock vouchers if you hit them.

Why it’s good:
- Lidl Plus Offers give extra discounts on top of already low prices.
- Monthly spend targets unlock bonus vouchers (£10 off after £200).
- Tailored coupons mean extra savings on things you buy.
What’s not so good:
- Savings can only be accessed via the app, which isn’t always suitable for everyone.
- There’s no ‘build-up’ of rewards – benefits are mostly short-term.
- You need to allow tracking for the best offers.
Marks & Spencer – Sparks
Sparks takes a different approach. No points are earned when you shop, but you can enjoy surprise treats, exclusive offers and donations to charity each time you shop.

Why it’s good:
- You could get your whole shop free – one customer per store per day.
- Enjoy freebies like Percy Pigs or Coffee.
- Sparks supports your chosen charity with every shop.
What’s not so good:
- No points or regular discounts – it’s not always money off.
- M&S is more premium-priced, so the perks help, but don’t always offset the higher prices.
Morrisons More Card

After trialling a points-free system, Morrisons brought back its More Card. Now, you earn points on everything, get instant ‘More Prices’ discounts, and even collect points from partner retailers online.
Why it’s good:
- You get points on nearly all your spending, including fuel, plus member-only prices.
- 5,000 points = £5 voucher, with occasional stamp cards for freebies.
- Partner Points in 2025 let you earn on shops from brands like ASOS and eBay.
What’s not so good:
- Rewards take time – 0.5% back isn’t huge unless you shop often.
- Vouchers and points can expire, so you need to stay on top of them.
- To get the full benefit, you’ll need to use the app or shop online.
Sainsbury’s Nectar Card
Nectar is huge – and not just at Sainsbury’s. You earn points at loads of retailers, and now also get exclusive ‘Nectar Prices’ at Sainsbury’s, which can slash prices on thousands of items.

Why it’s good:
- Points add up across shops – Argos, eBay, Esso and more.
- Nectar Prices mean real-time savings – often 30-50% off big-name items.
- Weekly personalised offers and bonus points can boost rewards fast.
What’s not so good:
- Basic earn rate is low – you need bonus offers or prices for real value.
- Rewards can feel fiddly, especially if you convert points to partners.
- Without a Nectar card, you risk paying more than other shoppers.
Tesco Clubcard

Tesco’s Clubcard remains one of the strongest schemes in the UK. You earn points on your shop and get big discounts with Clubcard Prices. You can also swap vouchers for 2x value with partners.
Why it’s good:
- Clubcard Prices can save you a fortune – often 50% off the shelf price.
- Points can be doubled at restaurants, days out and more.
- Coupons and bonus points are regular, both in-store and via mail.
What’s not so good:
- Tesco cut partner reward value from 3x to 2x.
- Some confusion with apps and digital tools during their tech updates.
- Clubcard Plus (a paid tier) might confuse people, but it’s optional.
Waitrose – myWaitrose
myWaitrose doesn’t give points, but it offers perks and weekly personalised vouchers. If you live near a Waitrose and shop often, the rewards are quality-driven rather than cashback-based.

Why it’s good:
- Free coffee is back – enjoy a daily hot drink with your own cup.
- Weekly vouchers are tailored to you and can cut your shopping down.
- 20% off counters on selected days, including cheese, meat or fish – perfect for foodies.
What’s not so good:
- No points or ongoing rewards to ‘build up’.
- You need to activate offers, so it’s not automatic.
- You’ll only benefit if you regularly shop at Waitrose – not a budget store.
Grocery Prices & Inflation
It’s no surprise that supermarket loyalty cards have become popular after the increase in food price inflation over the last few years. Although inflation on grocery prices has eased since its peak in 2022-2023, food and drink prices are still up by around 3.4% compared to last year, according to Gov.uk.
Although grocery items like vegetables and dairy fell in price at the end of 2024, other products are still getting pricier. Chocolate has been one of the fastest-rising categories, up around 16% year-on-year by early 2025, according to which.co.uk. Biscuits, butter and spreads have also increased by 7-8% over the past year while staples like bread, cereal and crisps have seen must smaller increases.
With this in mind, it’s safe to say that Brits are spending more on their weekly shops than they used to. Recent data shows the average UK household grocery spend (for food at home) is roughly £60-£70 per week or about £31 per person (on top of another £11 per person for takeaways and eating out). In 2023, an average household was spending £33.27 per person weekly on food and drink at home, that’s a £36.73 increase in the past 2 years gov.uk.
Many families have responded to rising food prices by swapping out big-branded products for store-owned brands, cutting out non-essentials and searching for the best deals. This is where loyalty schemes come in – with special member prices, reward points and free perks that can help you save on your grocery bills.

Most of us don’t stick to just one supermarket, so why only have one loyalty card? Sign up for the ones you use most for more member-only prices and exclusive offers wherever you shop!
Use the apps – they’re worth it
It’s not just about scanning your card anymore. Most supermarkets now pop extra coupons, personalised discounts, and even prize draws into their apps. A quick check before you head out can save you a few quid every week.
Stack the savings
If you’ve got a Clubcard voucher, use it during a Clubcard Price promotion. Loyalty schemes often let you combine offers, so look out for those moments when you can double up your discounts.
Switch to own-brand
Own-brand products are usually much cheaper than the big names, and most are just as good. Loyalty schemes often include extra discounts on these too.
Don’t let rewards go to waste
Some loyalty vouchers come with an expiry date, so keep an eye on your app or emails. It’s easy to forget about them, and no one wants to miss out on savings they’ve already earned!
