How To Save Money Shopping Online

Rebecca BebbingtonRebecca BebbingtonMay 7, 2026

Love shopping online? Check out our expert tips to help you save money every time you checkout.

Saving money online is still possible, but it takes a bit more than just waiting for a sale. With prices changing quickly, delivery costs creeping up, and discount codes varying from one retailer to the next, it pays to know where to look before you check out.

Our team has pulled together our top practical tips to help you spend less online, from finding verified discount codes and using price-drop alerts to checking refund rights, delivery fees, and loyalty perks.

Use these tips before your next online order, and you’ll have a much better chance of cutting the cost without missing out on what you actually want to buy.

Make an online shopping list

One of the biggest culprits of overspending is shopping without a list. You’ll often find that you spend way more when casually browsing online than when you shop for an individual item that you actually need. Avoid buying for the sake of it by making a list and sticking to it.

Image

Another good tactic is to add items to your basket and leave them for a few hours before buying. In most cases, you’ll find you change your mind once you’ve had some time away from your shopping cart. Also, avoid shopping when you’re bored as this is the prime time for impulsive buying. Do your bank account a favour and shop when you need to. It’ll save you a lot of money in the long run.

Compare prices

We all have a list of go-to brands that we tend to revisit time and time again, but brand loyalty is not always the best way to go. Before you buy your next beauty essential or expensive branded purchase, make sure you shop around and compare prices.

Comparing prices is not just for holidays or insurance either, you’ll often find high-end beauty products cheaper on sites like LOOKFANTASTIC and ASOS than you would at their own branded retailers. It’s also a good idea to compare the cost of popular kids’ toys and gadgets around Christmas, as some places really like to jack up prices.

Image

If you need help comparing costs, you can always download handy price comparison apps like PriceSpy and PriceRunner. These tools allow you to keep an eye on RRPs and price changes at multiple retailers so you can find the most value for money deal.

Use a verified voucher code before checkout

Image

One of the quickest ways to save money online is to check for a voucher code before you pay. It only takes a few seconds, but it can make a real difference to your total, especially if you’re buying something full price or placing a larger order.

At NetVoucherCodes, we list working and official promo codes for a wide range of retailers, so it’s worth searching for the store you’re shopping with before you complete your purchase. You can use the search bar at the top of the page, browse our latest offers, or look through our popular categories, including fashion, home, travel and beauty, if you need a bit of shopping inspiration.

You can also check our Top discount codes page to see which discounts are currently popular with other shoppers. This is a handy place to start if you’re looking for a strong offer but haven’t decided where to buy from yet.

We know how frustrating it is to find a discount code online, copy it across and then realise it has expired at checkout. That’s why our team checks codes regularly, and updates offers when they stop working, expire or come with specific terms. It saves you from wasting time trying old or copied codes that were never going to work in the first place.

Before you buy, it’s also worth checking the retailer’s own website to see whether they’re advertising a code on their homepage, newsletter pop-up or sale page. You can also do a quick Google search for terms like “Currys discount code” or “Currys exclusive discount code”. For the most recent offers, use Google’s tools to filter results from the last week. Short-term exclusive codes often run for a limited time, so newer results are usually more useful than older voucher pages.

To stay ahead of new offers, you can also sign up for the NetVoucherCodes newsletter. We’ll send a weekly round-up of our latest and best codes straight to your inbox, including exclusive offers, seasonal savings and popular discounts from brands our users are already shopping with.

Stack your discounts where the retailer allows it

Some retailers will let you use more than one saving on the same order, although this is not guaranteed. Before you check out, it is worth testing whether you can combine a voucher code with an existing sale price, clearance offer, newsletter discount, free delivery code or loyalty reward.

The best way to do this is to add everything to your basket and try each offer one at a time. If you have a percentage discount and a fixed amount discount, test both orders to see which gives you the better final price. Some retailers automatically apply the best offer for you, while others will only accept one code per order.

Even when code stacking is not allowed, you may still be able to save by shopping during a sale and then applying one valid promo code at checkout. This is often where the biggest savings happen, especially on fashion, beauty, homeware and electricals. Just make sure you check the terms first, as some codes exclude sale items, outlet products or certain brands.

Look for first-order discount codes

First-order discount codes are still one of the easiest ways to save when you’re shopping with a retailer for the first time. You’ll often see them appear as a welcome offer, newsletter sign-up code or pop-up discount when you first land on a site.

Some retailers also offer app-only discounts, so it’s worth checking whether you can save more by downloading the app before you buy. This is especially useful for fashion, beauty, homeware and lifestyle brands, where welcome codes are often used to encourage new customers.

Before you use the code, check the terms carefully. Some first-order offers only work on full-price items, while others exclude sale, outlet or clearance products. It’s always worth testing the code at checkout before you commit, as the best savings might come from using a welcome discount on a full-price item or shopping the sale instead.

You’ll usually need to enter your email address to get the code. To keep your main inbox tidy, you could use a separate shopping email address for retailer offers, order confirmations and discount alerts.

Abandon your basket

A great way to grab a discount is to abandon your basket right before you’re about to buy. This trick works well when you’re not in a rush to buy and almost always works. Once a retailer realises that you’ve abandoned your basket with items in it, they’ll often start sending you emails with reminders. And, if you wait long enough, they may even send you a discount code to persuade you to buy.

Image

Another tip is to browse around a website for a while before committing to anything. Sometimes, if retailers think you’re likely to stick around, they’ll display a pop-up for a one-off code or a welcome discount to use at checkout.

Keep in mind that it does not always work, but it is worth trying when you are not in a rush!

Use online chat to ask for a discount

Before you check out, it is worth opening the retailer’s live chat and asking whether there are any current discounts available. You do not need to haggle aggressively. A polite message asking if there are any promo codes, sale offers, or delivery deals on the item you are buying can sometimes point you towards a saving you might have missed!

Image

Live chat teams may also be able to tell you about student discounts, NHS or Blue Light offers, price matching, bundle deals or upcoming sales. This can be especially helpful if you are buying a higher-value item, such as furniture, electricals, appliances or tech, where even a small percentage off could make a noticeable difference.

It will not work every time, and some retailers will only share offers that are already listed on their website. Even so, it only takes a minute to ask, and it could help you find a better deal before you pay full price.

Sign up for Newsletters

One of the easiest ways to ensure you’re kept up to date with all the latest offers and discounts from your favourite retailers is to sign up for their newsletter. This is always free to do using your email address. Some stores even offer a discount on your first order when you sign up!

By signing up, you will be kept in the loop with any of their latest deals, upcoming sale offers & dates, birthday discounts and early sale access. Many stores also send you an exclusive discount on your birthday.

Image

Refer a Friend

If you’re a regular shopper at one of your favourite stores, why not share that love with mates for an exclusive discount? Most stores offer you and your friend a discount for referring them. They will usually offer a referral link, which your friend will need to use to make their purchase! And once they have, you and they could both save from 5 to 20% off your next order. You may even get a cash discount and loyalty points if you’re a member.

The best part is that most referral schemes don’t have a limit, meaning you can share the love with as many friends as you like. And the more friends you refer, the more discounts you will bag yourself once they make an order.

Student discounts

Just because you’re a student, doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the things you love! Students can make huge savings online with sites like Student Beans and UNiDays.

If you’re at college or university, sign up for free using your student email address. You’ll spot hundreds of popular online stores from fashion & footwear to travel sites, home stores and even restaurants.

Why not check out what student savings we have live on our site right now? You could be saving up to 25% off at your favourite stores!

NHS & Blue Light discounts

Online stores love to give back to our NHS heroes which is why if you work for the NHS, you can enjoy exclusive discounts just for you!

Apps like Blue Light Card are free to download and feature hundreds of special offers and voucher codes. All you have to do is log in using your NHS Email address and verify your account to get started.

Check prices in a private window

Online prices can change for all sorts of reasons, especially when you’re shopping for flights, hotels, package holidays, event tickets or in-demand products. The price you see may be affected by demand, your location, your browsing history, cookies, whether you’re logged into an account, and the retailer’s own pricing tools.

This is often called dynamic pricing. It does not mean every retailer is increasing prices because you have viewed an item before, but it does mean prices can move around more than you might expect.

If you’re making a bigger purchase, it is worth comparing the price in a few different ways before you buy:

  • Try checking the product in a private or incognito window, clearing your cookies, logging out of your account, or viewing the price on another device.
  • You can also compare the cost while using mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, especially for travel bookings.

This is not guaranteed to find you a lower price, but it can help you spot whether the cost is changing between searches. If the price is the same everywhere, you can buy with more confidence. If it drops in a private window or on another device, you’ll know it is worth taking a little extra time before checking out.

Time your purchase around major sale dates

If you are not in a rush to buy something, waiting for the right sale period can make a big difference. Retailers tend to plan discounts around key shopping moments, so it is worth checking whether a bigger promotion is coming up before you pay full price.

Image

January sales and Boxing Day sales are useful for homeware, fashion, Christmas decorations and anything retailers want to clear after the festive rush. Easter sales can be a good time to look for garden furniture, DIY, travel deals and spring wardrobe updates, while end-of-season clearance is ideal if you do not mind buying slightly out of season.

For bigger purchases, such as appliances, laptops, TVs and other electronics, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are still two of the biggest dates to watch. Many retailers now start their offers earlier in November, so it is worth comparing prices before the main weekend to make sure the discount is genuinely worthwhile.

You may also spot shorter sales around payday weekends, bank holidays, Prime Day-style events and seasonal moments such as back to school, summer holidays and Christmas gifting. If you have something sitting in your basket, waiting a few days could mean you catch a flash sale, extra promo code or free delivery offer before you check out.

Get Price Drop Alerts

If you have your eye on something expensive and are waiting for the best time to buy it, you may want to download a price tracker tool to make things easier.

Websites like Price Drops UK allow you to set price drop alerts on thousands of products from brands like Currys and Argos.

Google also has a price alert tracking feature that you can add to your Gmail account. Receive a notification whenever the cost of your product drops and grab the item at its lowest price! This is ideal if you’re not in a hurry or can’t find a voucher code to make an instant saving.

Shop clearance, outlet and last-chance sections

Most retailers provide sales and clearance outlets on their websites and if they don’t, it’s well worth waiting until one pops up. If there’s no dedicated sale section on the website you’re shopping at, make sure you wait and check back for a discount.

Sales events usually take place during the end of each season as well as busy times of the year such as Black Friday and the run-up to Christmas.

Image

If you aren’t bothered about having the latest pieces, you can also shop in clearance sections or showroom outlets. Here, you’ll find end-of-line pieces that have been reduced to clear.

Stay in the know about the latest sales by signing up for newsletters or by visiting us here at NetVoucherCodes.

Stock up only on products you already use

If you manage to grab a discount on an item you buy regularly, make sure you stock up while you can. Of course, there’s no point buying more than one item just for the sake of it, but if it’s something you can’t live without, then why not take advantage of the price drop?

The only thing to consider is the use-by date, especially on beauty products. If it’s going to take you a year to use each product, then it may be worth just buying one at a time.

Ask for a refund if the price drops

There is nothing worse than buying something online, and then realising shortly after that the price has dropped. If you fall victim to this, there is nothing wrong with asking for a refund. Some companies will refund you the difference if you notify them early. Keep in mind that some credit card companies also offer price protection - check with your provider to see if you qualify.

Meet free delivery thresholds or use Click & Collect

Delivery fees can quickly make a good deal feel less impressive, especially if you are only buying one or two smaller items. Before you check out, look for the retailer’s free delivery threshold and see how close your basket is to qualifying.

If you are only a few pounds short, it may be cheaper to add a small essential item you already need, such as toiletries, socks, batteries or cleaning products, rather than paying the delivery charge. Just avoid adding something random for the sake of it, as that can cancel out the saving.

Image

Click & Collect is another easy way to cut delivery costs if the retailer offers it. It is often free or cheaper than home delivery, and it can be handy if you have a store nearby or need your order quickly.

If you shop with the same retailer regularly, it is also worth checking whether they offer a delivery pass or membership scheme. These can be a good value if you place several orders a year, but only if the savings on delivery are more than the cost of the pass.

Watch out for small basket fees too. Some retailers add extra charges when your order falls below a certain amount, so always check the final total before paying. The cheapest option is not always the one with the lowest product price.

Use a loyalty or rewards card

If you shop at the same store regularly, it’s well worth signing up for the loyalty scheme or rewards programme. Look for a loyalty scheme before you shop and sign-up to collect rewards. Many retailers provide members with points for money off future spending as well as free gifts and discounts on selected products.

Save or spend your rewards and enjoy regular treats throughout the year. Some loyalty programmes even provide birthday treats and hierarchy systems that allow you to accumulate bigger and better rewards with every purchase!

Use subscriptions for products you buy regularly

Subscription savings can be useful if you regularly buy the same products online, but they are only worth it when they genuinely fit your routine. Think baby essentials, pet food, coffee, vitamins, razors, beauty refills, cleaning products or household basics you know you will use every month.

Some retailers offer a small discount when you set up repeat deliveries, while others give subscribers free delivery, early access to products or the option to pause and cancel whenever you need to. This can make life easier and help you avoid last-minute top-up shops, which are often where extra spending creeps in.

Image

Before you subscribe, compare the price against buying the same item as a one-off purchase. A subscription is not always the cheapest option, especially if the product later goes on sale or you find a better voucher code elsewhere.

It is also worth checking how flexible the plan is. Look for options to change the delivery date, skip a month, pause your order or cancel without being charged. If you only use the product occasionally, buying in bulk during a sale might work out cheaper than signing up for repeat deliveries.

Follow brands on social media for offers

If you regularly use Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Threads or X, it is worth following the brands you shop with most often. Retailers often use their social channels to share flash sales, limited-time discount codes, new product launches, app offers and competition updates.

TikTok Shop is also worth keeping an eye on if you already use the app, as some brands and creators share exclusive product deals or live shopping discounts. Just make sure you compare the final price with the retailer’s own website before buying, especially once delivery costs are added.

Image

Be careful with fake accounts and scam competitions. Fraudsters often copy well-known brand names, logos and product images to make their posts look genuine. If an offer looks too good to be true, asks for payment details to claim a prize, or sends you to a strange-looking website, avoid clicking through.

When in doubt, check the retailer’s official website or verified social profile before entering a competition or using a code. A genuine brand offer should usually be easy to find through their main site, newsletter or official social channels.

Buy refurbished, open-box or outlet items

Buying refurbished or open-box products can be a smart way to save money, especially on tech, appliances and electricals. If you’re shopping for a phone, laptop, tablet, camera or home gadget, it is worth checking whether the retailer has a refurbished, clearance or outlet section before buying new.

Retailers such as Music Magpie and Laptops Direct often stock refurbished tech, giving you the chance to pay less for items that have been checked, graded and resold. You may also find open-box products, customer returns or end-of-line stock at a lower price, which can be a good option if you are not too worried about having the newest model.

Before you buy, check the condition grade, warranty, returns policy and whether accessories are included. A refurbished item is only a good deal if it still gives you the protection and quality you need.

For fashion, homeware and smaller everyday buys, second-hand shopping can still be worth considering too. Just compare the price against the sale and outlet sections first, as you may find a brand-new item with a voucher code works out cheaper than buying pre-owned.

Use Buy Now, Pay Later carefully

Buy Now, Pay Later services like Klarna and Clearpay can be useful if you need to spread the cost of something essential, but they should not be treated as a discount! You are still paying the full amount, just over a longer period.

Before choosing this option, check:

  • How much each payment will be
  • When will the money leave your account
  • Whether there are any late payment fees
  • Whether the order is something you genuinely need
  • Whether a voucher code, sale price or cashback offer would save you more

BNPL can work well for planned purchases, especially if it helps you avoid using a credit card with interest. The risk comes when it makes impulse buys feel cheaper than they really are. If you would not buy the item at full price today, it is worth pausing before splitting the cost.

Check whether you can earn cashback too

Cashback can be another simple way to save on online shopping. Instead of giving you money off at checkout, cashback gives you a percentage of your spend back after your order has been tracked and confirmed.

It is worth checking whether cashback can be used alongside a voucher code, as some retailers allow both. This can work well when you are buying higher-value items such as appliances, furniture, holidays, beauty hauls or tech.

A few things to remember:

  • Cashback is not always guaranteed
  • It can take weeks or months to be paid
  • Using an unapproved voucher code could stop the cashback from tracking
  • The cheapest deal is still the one with the lowest final cost, not always the highest cashback rate

Before you buy, compare the cashback amount with any live discount codes, sale prices or free delivery offers. A 15% voucher code at checkout may be better than waiting for a small cashback payment later.

Try browser extensions, but do not rely on them completely

Browser extensions and automatic code-finding tools can be handy when you are shopping online. They scan for discount codes at checkout and test them for you, which can save time if you are in a rush.

That said, they do not always show every code. Some exclusive or short-term offers may only appear on the retailer’s website, in newsletters, on social media, or on trusted voucher code sites like NetVoucherCodes.

For the best chance of saving, use browser tools as a backup rather than your only check. Before you pay:

  • Search the retailer on NetVoucherCodes
  • Check the retailer’s own homepage and sale page
  • Look for newsletter or app-only discounts
  • Test the code at checkout
  • Compare the final total with delivery included

It only takes a minute or two, and it could help you find a better code than the one automatically suggested.

Use AI tools to compare prices before you buy

AI shopping tools can be useful when you are trying to compare prices quickly. You can ask them to summarise product reviews, compare similar items, or help you check which retailer appears to have the best price for a specific product.

This can be especially helpful for bigger purchases, such as laptops, appliances, furniture, baby products or travel essentials, where the price can vary a lot between retailers.

However, AI tools are not always up to date. A price, delivery charge or discount code may have changed by the time you click through, so always check the retailer’s own website before you buy.

A good way to use AI is to ask it to narrow down your options, then do the final checks yourself. Look at the live product price, delivery cost, returns policy, warranty and whether you can use a voucher code before checking out.

Know your online returns rights

One of the benefits of shopping online in the UK is that you usually have extra time to change your mind. For most online orders, you have 14 days from receiving your item to tell the retailer you want to cancel, then another 14 days to send it back.

This can make online shopping feel less risky, especially if you are buying clothes, shoes, furniture, homeware or anything you need to see in person before deciding.

There are some exceptions, though. Personalised items, perishable goods, opened hygiene products and some sealed products may not be covered in the same way, so always check the retailer’s returns policy before you buy.

A quick returns check can save you money later. Look for:

  • How long do you have to return the item
  • Whether returns are free
  • Whether you need to pay postage
  • Whether sale items are included
  • Whether refunds go back to your original payment method
  • Whether you can return online orders in-store

A discount is only a good deal if you are not stuck with something you cannot return.

How I've Saved

Image
“I had my eye on a £180 air fryer that kept selling out at full price. Instead of buying straight away, I added it to my basket on three different retailer sites and left them. Two of the three emailed me a 10% welcome code within 48 hours, and the cheapest retailer undercut the others by another £15 once I applied the code. I paid £147 in the end, saving £33 for ten minutes of patience and three abandoned baskets.”
